Role

Farmless is building the protein breweries of tomorrow. Breweries that are up to 5000× more land-efficient than animal or plant proteins. Within a few years, we’ll be running our first commercial-scale factories, producing thousands of tonnes of protein to help feed millions while freeing land for rewilding.

To run these facilities, we've developed BrewBase: our in-house operating system that connects everything from fermentation to final food product.

BrewBase tackles a question most biotech and food companies avoid: how do you manage complex fermentations at scale? Instead of patching together SCADA systems, LIMS tools, and spreadsheets, we’re building a single platform that connects biology and software, enabling real-time monitoring, automated data flows, and intelligent control.

This internship offers a rare opportunity to build core infrastructure for a new industry. You’ll work at the intersection of software, biology, and automation. And you’ll own high-impact projects that shape how the next generation of food is made.

Responsibilities

Depending on your background and interests, you might work on:

  • Data Engineering & Automation

    • Build automated analysis pipelines in Python

    • Connect lab instruments and sensors directly to BrewBase

    • Design ETL workflows that turn raw data into insights

  • Real-Time Monitoring & Visualisation

    • Create dashboards for live fermentation monitoring

    • Build tools that spot trends and anomalies at a glance

    • Make complex biological processes readable and intuitive

  • Industrial Systems & Automation

    • Bridge the gap between OT and IT systems

    • Expand BrewBase into a full SCADA platform

    • Enable two-way communication with PLCs and control equipment

  • Intelligence & Optimisation

    • Apply machine learning to fermentation modelling

    • Build soft sensors that infer hidden process parameters

    • Prototype LLM-based tools for experiment design and troubleshooting

  • Food Product Development

    • Develop tools for recipe management and sensory data tracking

    • Connect formulations with functionality and application results

Current stack: Postgres, React, TypeScript, shadcn, Python (and plenty of room for your input).

Requirements

We look for builders. You’re hungry to learn, unafraid to break things, figure out how fast you can really learn and are curious about everything that makes complex systems work. You’ll need:

  • Full Stack Skills: Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, React, and modern web frameworks. Comfortable working across frontend and backend.

  • Database Knowledge: Experience with SQL and understanding of database design principles.

  • Builder Mentality: You've built projects beyond coursework. Personal projects, open source contributions, hackathon wins. Show us what you've made.

  • Fast Learner: Excited to dive into unfamiliar domains like fermentation biology, industrial automation, and food science.

  • Mission Driven: Our goal of revolutionizing food production genuinely excites you.

Bonus points for:

  • Python for data analysis and automation

  • Time-series databases and data visualization (Grafana, Plotly, D3.js)

  • Machine learning and data science techniques

  • Systems programming languages (C++ or Rust)

  • Industrial protocols (OPC UA, Modbus) or SCADA systems

  • Experience with hardware or embedded systems

  • Biology, chemistry, or food science background

  • Previous startup experience

Expected Outcomes

  • Shipped production features used daily by our fermentation and food science teams

  • Mastered the full stack, from frontend to automation systems

  • Built novel infrastructure that doesn’t exist anywhere else

  • Learned deeply about fermentation, bioprocessing, and food production, domains few software engineers ever encounter

Rewards

  • A flat, fast, and curious team working on one of the most exciting challenges in food

  • An international, high-talent, low-ego culture where ideas matter more than titles

  • Room to grow into whatever version of the role you make yours

  • Daily plant-based lunch, snacks, fruits, drinks

  • In house gym & regular team sport activities

  • Fun off sites & team drinks

What we’re building

We’re going beyond the limiting constraints of photosynthesis. We use natural fermentation to turn simple ingredients into complex proteins. It’s what we've been doing for millennia with wine, beer, bread and yoghurt.

Yet most fermentations rely on sugars - which are derived from crops grown on agricultural land. Our fermentation platform relies on an easily storable and shippable renewable energy based feedstock. This allows us to break free from the limiting constraints of photosynthesis.

We’re building the spiritual successor to the Haber-Bosch process. While Haber-Bosch led to cheap synthetic fertilizer which currently feeds half of humanity, we have found a way to produce amino acid complete proteins up to ±5000X more land efficient than animals. By rough approximation this could multiply the carrying capacity of the earth by an order of magnitude. The result of our ambition should be visible from space.

About us

We’re a small, highly technical and deeply curious team with deep food and fermentation expertise with backgrounds from the Vegetarian Butcher, Perfect Day to Nature’s Fynd and many more.

We’re flat and interdisciplinary by design. We value autonomy, speed, and ambition. You’ll have the freedom to build, and the responsibility to do it well.

We’re based within the city ring of Amsterdam – for a reason. We want to attract the best people from around the world and believe that Amsterdam is a great place to settle – and bike to work. On top of that, the Netherlands is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. The Dutch have a mindset to push the boundaries of food production and have the practical expertise to scale up our fermentation platform.

We believe hardware startups can thrive in Europe. If we can get approval here, we can do it anywhere (and we want Europe to accelerate).

We’ve raised €9M from world-class investors including World Fund, Vorwerk Ventures, Revent, and Nucleus Capital, and European and national grants.
